According to a poll by The Independent, around 58% of its readers believe that the war in Afghanistan is "unwinnable" and that troops should be pulled out. Gordon Brown consistently insists that the war is right and that British troops are following the right stategy.
President Obama wants to send 40'000 more troops to Afghanistan. He awaits approval from Congress and the Senate. However, military strategists have said that Obama needs to send at least 44'000 troops and an additional 26'000 troops to help train Afghan Security Forces.
The current troop numbers and forecast increases mean that Britain and America can only maintain and reinforce the presence in Afghanistan. I think either we have to aim to win the war (if that's possible) or get out and declare Afghanistan a failed state.
You never know, maybe hyper-authoritarian Karzai will keep the fundamentalist militants at bay. Though, to be honest, his regime are just as anti-democratic, just as authoritarian and just as religiously fundamentalist as the Taliban. He's even re-implemented the infamous "warlord" strategy recently. Do we really want to keep him in power?
